is Iran safe? - travel to Iran

“After listening to so many people telling me that I was crazy for wanting to travel to Iran, I have to admit that I was a little nervous. Although I tried to ignore comments from people who speak ill of places they have never been to, when it came time to travel to Iran, I was a little scared. However, all the anxiety disappeared completely within a few hours of being in Iran. In Iran I always felt safe and the travelers I met there confirmed my first impressions: there is nothing to worry about.”

That is a common experience for travelers coming to Iran. One of the first questions one asks when traveling is ‘Is it a safe destination.?’ With regard to Iran what is it that makes people fearful about this country?

Media influence

Today our society is constantly bombarded with information via different media sources. This influences our way of life and our opinions. Over time it can change our way of thinking and what we perceive as reality. The media can inform us about local and world events, but at times, for economic or political interests, it becomes pure manipulation

The anti-Iranian propaganda machine has reached a new level and has brought up issues that have never really been problems, such as safety. Anyone influenced by western media is likely to ask the question “Is it safe to travel in Iran?”. The worlds media, swayed by American sanctions on Iran, has the power to manipulate people into believing that Iran is not safe, and that is achieved by spreading fear and mis-information.

The discordance between the media and the reality is certainly remarkable. But we know that the media have long lost their status as champions of freedom of speech and are proving less often to be “the mirror of society”. Precisely for this reason, more and more people choose personal blogs and reviews for reliable information. Travelers to Iran return with a very different perspective of the country than when they arrived. They come back with a strong desire to tell the world what the media ignores.

Is Iran a safe destination?

The answer is clear and emphatic: Yes. Iran is one of the safest and quietest countries in Asia. In Iran you can move around the country and walk through its streets with a feeling of total security. Crime levels are lower than crime and theft statistics in Europe or the US and it is rare to hear reports of robberies, theft or personal harm.

Inevitably, situations can arise that make us feel uncomfortable. It happens in Iran as it happens anywhere else. No country in the world is 100% free from risk. But all in all, anyone who has traveled to Iran confirms that Iran is a very safe destination. Please verify my statement by asking real travelers as they are the most reliable source of information.

Is it safe for women to travel to Iran?

Iran is very safe for female travelers, including solo travelers. It is actually very common to see women traveling both independently and in groups. It is true that the hijab (head covering) can be a bit uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t stop you from experiencing this fascinating country. Security levels are much the same as in Europe and the most dangerous thing that can happen to you when traveling alone is that Iran will steal your heart!

People

Iranian people are particularly characterized by kindness, hospitality, warmth, congeniality and intelligence. They welcome foreigners with open arms. It is common for them to approach with a smile upon seeing strangers to ask where they come from, if they are enjoying Iran and what places they have visited. After taking an interest, they will wish you a happy stay and continue on their way. Occasionally, conversations can end with an invitation to dinner.

With so many incredible places to see and warm and inviting people, Iran can become highly addictive! It may be difficult to find another country that you like so much!
Conclusion: Leave your prejudices behind!

Mark Twain said that traveling is fatal to prejudice and narrow-mindedness. And Iran is likely to be one of the places where this saying makes the most sense. We should travel to see with our own eyes what the media does not show us and to eliminate the mental borders imposed on us. Traveling always broadens the mind, and going to lesser known countries, even more so. Therefore, before traveling to Iran, the first thing to do is remove the media induced prejudices from your mind. Iran is a diverse country in every aspect. If you travel based on this idea, you will have the opportunity to discover a country with one of the most spectacular historical heritages on the planet, and a society that welcomes its visitors with overwhelming hospitality.
